Coins can be used to buy hints. 

If you're stuck on a clue in a puzzle, tap one of the buttons next to the image to activate a hint. 

Hints can fill in the next letter in the currently highlighted clue, or to remove the unused letters from the selection area (making the current clue easier to guess).
